Guidelines for Ph.D. Qualifying Exam

Guidelines for Ph.D. Qualifying Exam

For students who enrolled in 2023 and earlier

Students must choose 2 subjects for the qualifying exam out of the following 3 subjects: ‘Real Analysis’, ‘Algebra’, and ‘Numerical Analysis and Applications’.

The student may take one more attempt per subject if he/she fails in the first test on each subject. Students must pass the two subjects before their 5th semester of the Ph.D/M.S-Ph.D. program starts.

Students who already got A+ grade among ‘Real Analysis’, ‘Algebra’, and ‘Numerical Analysis and Applications’ or equivalent ones in UNIST undergraduate, graduate school, or even other universities could be exempted from taking those subjects with committee’s review.

The student who is transferred from the department other than mathematical sciences must pass within 1 year after transferred. Upon the decision of the Department’s Graduate Committee, one-year extension or exemption would be possible.

For students who enrolled in 2024 and beyond

Students must choose one of the following three courses for their qualifying exam: 1. Real Analysis, 2. Algebra, and 3. Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis.

Students may have one more chance if they fail on the first attempt. Students must pass a written exam before their 5th semester starts, and this regulation only applies to doctoral and combined program students.

Students who receive an A+ grade in at least one of the subjects (Real Analysis, Algebra, and Numerical Analysis and Applications) or equivalent courses during their undergraduate or graduate program at UNIST, including other universities, can be exempted from the exam upon the department’s academic affairs committee’s review.

Students who transferred from a different department must pass within one year after their transfer. Upon the decision of the department’s academic affairs committee, a one-year extension or exemption would be possible.
